From the diary of Type 1 Diabetic - Questions and Answers

  •  How do you control your emotions?

As an amateur leisure artist, I never try to control my emotions. I always strive to reduce the severity by which I respond to an emotional state. Happiness, anger, anxiety, etc., are natural phenomena that need an expression with the right zeal.

  • What changed after and before when you knew you got diabetes?

Except for lifestyle and outlook, everything remains the same after getting acquainted with Type 1 Diabetes, switching from being a planner to a doer, substituting ‘should’ with ‘want,’ eating dessert to cooking and serving dessert. Still, the most remarkable one is accepting a baby’s smile rather than a butterscotch ice cream as the sweetest thing in the world.

  •  How did you know you have this disease? What are its symptoms? Is it genetic?

Intensively practicing for the upcoming District Judo Championship 2009, I lost around 10 kg in a month, which was mistaken due to my intense workout for the tournament. After a few days, the condition became critical, accompanied by excessive thirst, frequent urination, and difficulty in breathing. Doctors misdiagnosed it as pneumonia, which further led me to unconsciousness, and referred me to a higher center. It was too late for the doctors at the local level to control my blood sugar of 495 mg/dl and DKA (Diabetes Ketoacidosis) with just insulin injections.

Type 1 Diabetes was totally new to the family as no one was suffering from this earlier, which means it is not genetically inherited. Along with my family, I tried our best to accept this stranger as our new family member.

  • ❤What you love most about your disease?

Living with type 1 is like transforming myself into a diverse personality, satisfying my inquisitiveness when each day of my life starts with new experiences and ends with new learnings. The loveliest thing about being Type 1 is that it always urges me to be more physical and psychologically active.

  • How to mentally make yourself healthy?

According to Walter Mischel’s Marshmallow experiment, a child who learned to resist temptation is more likely to succeed in the future than a child who is less able to resist temptation.

Repeatedly practicing to make yourself mentally healthy gradually becomes a habit when one is not given an option to give up but to accept and face with your own mastery whatever comes in the way.

  • What precautions should be taken by those who have Diabetes Type I?

Keeping your awareness alive about the long-term complications is more than sufficient for developing a precautionary attitude as a Type 1 Diabetic.

The following five principles are critical to a euphoric life for type 1 diabetic

1.  Regular intake of the prescribed amount of medication.

2.  Commitment to scheduled physical workout.

3.  Healthy Diet

4.  Spontaneous appointment with your doctor.

5.  Take intensive care of your eyes, foot, teeth, and heart

6.  Keep your blood sugar levels under control.
